| Lessons from the first debate: It's the system, stupid! |
Listening to John McCain during the first presidential debate in Mississippi, one might easily draw the conclusion that Republicans need to be sheltered from temptation.
"We came to change Washington and it changed us", he summed up in a rare moment of candour.
Also: The corruption that has sent many politicians to jail (one almost expected him to call them "fine young men") is solely due to the temptations of earmarkings and such. Honestly, how could politicians be expected to resist that kind of lure?
So there you have it: politicians are blameless.
BTW: McCain confusing "doctor" with "disease" (or possibly even "deceased") was priceless.
That said, when "safely" on Foreign Policy terrain, and above all not using every second to misrepresent Obama's statements, but rather free to expound on his many travels abroad, McCain seems almost... presidential. In an oldfashioned sort of way.
The problem is, his many travels doesn't seem to have taught him anything other than the US has to confront everyone else harshly. He seems to have seen the world he traveled through with a constant look of contempt and disdain. Not promising...
